Gallery Night Reception: October 17, 5-9pm
Gilding the Shoestrings II features the Women in White Collection created by Howard who is an associate professor of costume design at the University of Rhode Island and Resident Costume Designer at the Sandra Feinstein Gamm Theatre.
The costumes in the exhibit range historically from women’s 16th century gowns to contemporary dresses, and a variety of men’s pieces from the same historic periods. Selected pieces from the new collection, “Women in White” will be on view for the first time. This project was developed as a series of study pieces created during Howard’s Sabbatical.
The garments represent historical periods, including the undergarments, created in white with minimal adornment to focus attention on the complicated and unique construction of historical clothes, without the distraction of colour and décor.
