Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with music ranging from the classical era to today!

The American Band will present a concert on February 4th at 3pm in The Fine Arts Center Concert Hall of the University of Rhode Island. The band, led by Dr. Brian Cardany, will play pieces in celebration of Black History Month. Composers featured include Katahj Copley, Joseph Bologne, William Grant Still, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Dwayne Milburn, James Reese Europe, George Walker, Florence Price, Omar Thomas, and Scott Joplin & Louis Chauvin.

A Pre-Concert talk by URI Assistant Professor and jazz trombonist Emmett Goods will begin at 2:45pm.

The American Band was founded in 1837 in Providence, RI, and is one of the oldest community bands in the United States. The band was present at the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861, and played tunes on the Crescent Park Pier to welcome guests to the amusement park off the ferry in the 1890s. The band has grown from a brass and drum group into a 60-member wind ensemble.
