Title: Mechanisms of Pacific Climate Variability and Impacts on Marine Ecosystems
Abstract: In this talk, I will provide a review of the mechanisms and modes of Pacific climate variability and change, including the dynamics of recent climate extremes in the Pacific such as marine heatwaves. Among the mechanisms discussed are the role of two-way coupling between the tropics and the extra-tropics, the coupling between the western and eastern boundary current system, and the scale interactions between climate change, decadal-scale variability, and extremes. Building on this type of Pacific variability, I will discuss some of the ways through which climate forcing impacts marine populations, including the tendency for global-scale synchrony in marine ecosystems. To illustrate these principles, we will make use of live human samples in the audience! Please come prepared.
