DESCRIPTION:Communicating environmental justice and social equity in the co
ntext of the ocean is a complex challenge—especially when we aim to bring f
orward critical voices and address equity rather than merely equality. This
discussion goes beyond questions of distribution or representation\; it ca
lls for a deeper examination of social justice and the structural forces th
at shape injustice. We ought to connect environmental injustices with broad
er dimensions of social justice\, including gender\, race\, and colonialism
\, recognizing that even well-intentioned “equitable approaches” can reprod
uce existing power imbalances.\n\n \n\nScience communication and critical j
ournalism play vital roles in sparking these conversations. Scholars workin
g on environmental justice have a responsibility to make their expertise ac
cessible and relevant to the public. However\, such collaboration between j
ournalists and researchers requires mutual trust and shared values.\n\n \n\
nTo address this need\, the NF Ocean Nexus Program\, Metcalf Institute\, an
d the Uproot Project have launched a new initiative to connect Ocean Nexus
scholars focusing on ocean equity with journalists working on environmental
justice. Together\, they are challenging conventional models of science co
mmunication. This webinar highlights the first-year experiences of the fell
ows and the institutional leaders who supported this pioneering partnership
