Sand Painting of Compassion Mandala

Seven Tibetan Buddhist monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery will construct Mandala Sand Painting for compassion from September 18-22, 2017 at URI Memorial Union Main Lounge.

From all the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism, that of painting with colored sand ranks as one of the most unique and exquisite. Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over a period of one week to form the image of Avalokiteshvara Mandala.

To date Drepung Loseling monks have created Mandala Sand Painting in more than 100 museums, colleges, and universities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. They were also featured in the House of Cards Season-3 Episode 7.

The Mandala Opening Ceremony will start with chanting and meditation at 12 noon on Monday, September 18, and the Closing Ceremony will begin at 12 noon on Friday, September 22.

The event is sponsored and organized by the URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies. It is free and open to the public.
