DESCRIPTION:This URI Summer Faculty-led program focuses on the areas of sus
 tainable and urban agriculture and local food cultures in the city of Naple
 s and the Amalfi Coast. Students will learn through immersion and hands-on 
 learning workshops including visits to local farms and agribusinesses\, far
 ming and cooking workshops\, a workshop on artisanal fishing\, visits to vi
 neyards\, and nature hikes. Travel to the city of Naples and visit Pompeii\
 , the Island of Procida\, the Amalfi Coast\, and the outskirts of Naples li
 ke Portici and Caserta to learn about sustainable agriculture and cultural 
 heritage through an Italian lens. Students will explore the food traditions
  of the Mediterranean through cooking workshops\, visits to local restauran
 ts and markets\, vineyards and farms. Through immersion in Italian sustaina
 ble food production and customs\, students will gain unique perspectives bo
 th on the host culture’s values and their home culture’s values surrounding
  food consumption and production.\n\n \n\nCourses:Students will earn 3 cred
 its in the following areas: APG/SOC/GWS 308 or APG308H: Sustainable Agricul
 ture and Food Cultures.\n\nStudents who have taken 308 as a semester-long c
 ourse or require 400-level credit may take one of these courses:\n\n APG 47
 0: Problems in Anthropology/Directed StudySOC 498/499: Independent Study \n
 \nAcademics Information:\n\nThis 3-credit course will give students an inva
 luable experience learning first-hand from local Italians on their unique c
 ulture and traditions surrounding food\, and the importance of sustainabili
 ty in agriculture. In addition to visiting farms\, open-air markets\, and f
 ood preparation workshops\, students will learn about the preservation of a
 ncient foodways\, local farming practices\, medicinal plants\, and ethnobot
 any. At the end of this course\, students will be able to understand the co
 nnections between nature\, sustainability\, and culture in intercultural an
 d highly localized contexts.\n\n \n\nInterested students must apply by 2/1:
