Jane Ferguson, award-winning international correspondent for PBS NewsHour and contributor to the New Yorker, will deliver a lecture titled, “Humanity in War Reporting: Bringing Authentic, Individual Experiences of War into Conflict Journalism,” on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, at 7 p.m. in Edwards Auditorium.

The event is part of the University of Rhode Island’s Christiane Amanpour Lecture series, an annual event presented by the Harrington School of Communication and Media.

Ferguson’s lecture will explore the techniques and approaches used to bring nuanced humanity to storytelling in conflicts, from exploring the stories of compelling characters to gaining unparalleled access, as well as writing and on-camera styles of reporting that capture the human experience. The lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session moderated by Vladimir Duthiers, a correspondent and anchor for CBS News and a 1991 URI graduate.

Ferguson’s reporting has included front-line dispatches from the war against ISIS in Iraq, an up-close look at Houthi-controlled Yemen, and reports on the war and famine in South Sudan. Throughout 2021, Ferguson reported extensively from Afghanistan, spending time with government troops, local militia, and the Taliban as the group marched on Kabul. On August 15, 2021, Ferguson and her cameraman boarded the last commercial flight permitted to fly to Kabul and witnessed the Taliban enter the city hours later.

Ferguson’s work has earned a Gracie Award, the Overseas Press Club Peter Jennings Award, an Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Award, a News and Documentary Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, and the George Polk Award for Foreign Television Reporting.

The Christiane Amanpour Lecture is endowed by and named for the 1983 URI alumna and 1995 honorary degree recipient. She is chief international anchor for CNN and host of its award-winning, flagship global affairs program Amanpour, as well as Amanpour & Co., which airs on PBS in the United States. Launched in 2008, the speaker series brings well-respected journalists to campus each year.

A livestream option is also available. A stream URL will be sent out to registrants within 24 hours of the event.
