Faculty Office Hour: Sustainability in Textiles

Tuesday, February 08, 2022 at 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Virtual Event

Faculty Office Hour's theme for the winter/spring 2022 semester is sustainability. Join us for in-depth discussions on several aspects of this important topic.

In our first session, we welcome a panel of professors from the College of Business to discuss sustainability in textiles and fashion, specifically related to plastics.

Moderator: Karl Aspelund, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Department Chair, Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design
Dr. Aspelund is an anthropologist with an art and design background whose research interests are directed toward the role apparel and design plays in the creation of personal, ethnic and national identity. Environmental concerns, especially in how the design community needs to contribute to environmental sustainability are also an increasing area of interest and focus.

Panelist: Izabela Luiza Ciesielska-Wrobel, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design
Dr. Ciesielska-Wrobel earned her B.Sc, M.Sc., and Ph.D. in textile technology and textile manufacturing. Her current interests revolve around textile technologies, especially knitting, smart textiles, perception of textiles, conversion, and processing of ocean plastic wastes, technical and protective textiles, high-performance materials, and metal-organic frameworks.

Panelist: Seray Ergene, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Management
Dr. Ergene received her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she acquired critical analysis tools to question assumptions underlying management theories and practices. The central theme of her research is sustainability, and her projects explore organizations that challenge the conventional norms of the business case.

Big things are happening in classrooms, labs, and workspaces all over campus at the University of Rhode Island. Spend an hour with the College of Business and learn something new!
