This fall, Faculty Office Hour is focusing on brain health.
In our third session, Nicole O'Malley will explore neurologic music therapy. Nicole is an assistant clinical professor and director of URI's Music Therapy program, a new degree program that trains students to use their musical skills in a health care setting to improve patients' sensorimotor, cognitive, language, emotion, and social outcomes. Nicole received a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy from Anna Maria College and a Master of Arts in Music Therapy from Berklee College of Music. She is a neurologic music therapy fellow and has completed level I neonatal intensive care unit training. She is the founder and executive director, and president of Hands in Harmony, a local 501c3 nonprofit offering neurologic music therapy throughout Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts.
Nicole's presentation will explore the impact of music on the brain. Learn how music therapy works, how it is different from traditional music enrichment programs, and how it can improve patient outcomes in many situations.
The presentation will be moderated by Duval Clear '88, also known as Masta Ace. Duval is a well-known American rapper and record producer who is considered highly influential in the industry.
Big things are happening in classrooms, labs, and workspaces all over campus at the University of Rhode Island. Spend an hour with Nicole O'Malley and learn something new!
