Dana Shugar Colloquium: Lectures in Gender and Women's Studies

The Dana Shugar Colloquium presents
Christine Mok, Department of English
"Vietnam in Virginia: Race, Gender, Performance"
In this talk, Dr. Mok explores visual, performative, and feminist practices of remembering the Vietnam War in  An-My Lê's photographic series, Small Wars, which displaces and replaces the U.S. South for sites in Vietnam, and reframes the photographer as a performer playing the yellow woman. By troubling the project of her subjects to touch the past and reenact the Vietnam War and privileging her own speculative relation, Lê’s performances and photographs challenge the compliance and resistance of minoritarian subjects.
