About this Event
“Exposure Assessment of Nano and Advanced Materials
and Sampling Techniques”
Abstract:
Nanotechnology has fostered the development of novel technology and products to benefit our life since early 1990. Scientists, stakeholders, and governors have been working closely in many countries to understand potential risks of this fast-growing technology. There are indications that a range of engineered nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, agglomerates of nanoparticles, and particles of nanostructured materials, present potential risks to human health and the environment. Advanced materials and manufacturing have been quickly developed in the industry in the past decade. This presentation will present the current status of nano and advanced materials in the industry, exposure assessment and sampling techniques needed for small aerosols.
Dr. Tsai’s research addresses occupational and environmental health and safety issues in a sustainable manner from the beginning of technology development. She will present the newest understanding to this topic including the sampling techniques and environmental burden associated with nanoparticles.
Bio:
Dr. Candace Tsai is an Associate Professor of Environmental Health and Industrial Hygiene at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). She is the Director and Principal Investigator of the Occupational Health and Safety Education Programs on Emerging Technologies at UCLA funded by NIEHS, and the Deputy Director of Industrial Hygiene program at Southern California Education Research Center (SCERC). She has more than 20 years of post-educational experiences in the field of industrial hygiene and engineering in both her academic and industrial career. She is the author of numerous scientific journal articles and the textbook entitled “Health and Safety Considerations for Working with Engineered Nanoparticles”, by Wiley, and is the Associate Editor for the Encyclopedia of Nanotechnology. Dr. Tsai has served as an US expert for International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and World Health Organization (WHO) for nanotechnology projects. She is a Board Member of Sustainable Nanotechnology Organization; she serves for the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) as a voting committee member for the Threshold Limit Values for Chemical Substances (TLV-CS) ACGIH TLV committee.
