Brothers United for Action 25 Year Commemoration

https://urinvolved.uri.edu/event/9920177The BUA were the torchbearers of the BSLG, picking up where they left off. Through their 2 Demands and 10 Points of Light they changed the trajectory of the University in ways including but not limited to the hiring of racially diverse faculty and staff; diversifying the curriculum; financial support for students of color and disadvantaged backgrounds who were not admitted through the Talent Development program; and increased support for what is now known as the Office of Disability, Access, and Inclusion and the Gender and Sexuality Center to name a few.
The purpose of this event is threefold. .
1. To honor and recognize the work and sacrifices made by the BUA.
2. For current scholars, especially those of marginalized populations, to learn from and be inspired by the instrumental changes made by their predecessors----and to not only be inspired and learn from, but to also understand the power that comes from their mobilized and organized voices.
3. Acknowledging the work that still has to be done 25 years later.
As a part of the commemoration, there is also a documentary being filmed so that the work of the BUA will live on in the University archives and elsewhere.
This documentary is being led by current TD scholar Cristobal Bustos, creator of the BSLG documentary, A Voice Was Heard.

5-6pm will take place in the MSSC and will consist of community building and performances related to the BUA Movement.
6-8pm will be the speaking program and dinner catered by Gee Gee's Southern Cuisine in the Ram's Den.
