Title:
Photons, Phytoplankton and Climate
By Dr. Susanne Craig, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center/USRA
Abstract:
"Phytoplankton play fundamental roles in aquatic food webs, atmospheric carbon dioxide uptake and the burial of carbon to the deep ocean for climate-relevant time scales. In addition to these roles, phytoplankton are known to emit a complex suite of volatile organic compounds, which, under certain conditions, can lead to the formation of aerosols that play a significant role in atmospheric radiative forcing. The advent of satellite remote sensing of ocean color revolutionized our understanding of phytoplankton dynamics in the open ocean. However, the most intense regions of primary productivity are often found in coastal and shelf seas where derivation of accurate ocean color metrics of phytoplankton biomass can be particularly challenging. To address this, we have developed bleeding edge machine learning methods for accurately estimating phytoplankton biomass in these waters. These results will then be placed in context of ongoing studies in the Northwest Atlantic that investigate regional phytoplankton dynamics and their relationship with atmospheric aerosol formation measured at an atmospheric chemistry supersite on Sable Island in the Northwest Atlantic."
