This student workshop is part of the African Caribbean Intersectional Engagement Series which is included in the Annual Lecture Series on African American, Black Diaspora, and Global Black Lives sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences.

The workshop will help students wrestle with how they are expected to express their ideas in academic spaces and the gap between this space and the culture of home, family, and friends. Without tools to reconcile this gap, students may lose their voice, internalize shame, and suffer from anxiety and/or depression without knowing why. This workshop is aimed at assisting students with how to find and keep their voice and stay whole.

This workshop will be conducted by Dr. Catherine John, Department Chair of Africana Studies, and Taitu Heron. Taitu Heron is a Caribbean scholar, activist, and policy strategist. She is the Head of the Women and Development Unit at the University of the West Indies, Open Campus, in Cave Hill, Barbados.
