2019 Africana Studies Lecture Series: Of Diamonds, Despoliation and Tourists: A Close Reading of Fiston Mwanza Mujila's Tram 83

Professor Gitahi Gititi, from Departments of English and Africana Studies, will lecture on the novel, Tram 83 , written by Fiston Nasser Mwanza Mujila, a Congolese writer who lives in Graz, Austria, where he teaches African literature. His novel examines the devastation wrought by successive dictatorships in the Democratic Republic of Congo, especially the effects on the economy, the social fabric, and the dream of national sovereignty. The collusion of individual and corporate interests, both internal and external, are part of this almost phantasmagoric narrative.  This lecture is free and open to the public.
