Gender & Sexuality Center
19 Upper College Rd, Kingston, RI 02881, USA
For World AIDS Day at URI, Motivational Speaker and AIDS activist Scott Fried will join us to discuss issues and share his personal story with the community. World AIDS Day, designated on 1 December every year since 1988, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection, and mourning those who have died of the disease.
Scott Fried will join us for the following:
12 –1:30 p.m. Social Media and True Intimacy
In this lecture, Motivational Speaker and AIDS activist Scott Fried will discuss how social media may create false intimacy, instead of allowing individuals to experience true closeness. He also discusses other dangers, explaining how platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr provide momentary distractions and embolden individuals to behave less civilly toward one another. In addition, he offers tips for healthy Internet relations and developing an appropriate Internet persona. Friday, December 1 at 12 to 1:30 p.m., Gender & Sexuality Center
2–4 p.m. Sexual Health and Safer Sex
Scott Fried will discuss healthy sexuality, safer sex, condoms, PrEP, TasP, PEP and other new health information related to HIV/AIDS. URI Health Services will participate to let the audience know about resources that are available on campus. Friday, December 1 at 2 pm to 4:00pm, Memorial Union, Atrium 1
5:30 –8 p.m. "From Scared to Sacred: AIDS Love and Staying Alive"
As part of World Aids Day, in conjunction with the Gender and Sexuality Center, and Health Services, Hillel will host a short Healing Service at 5:30 p.m. Followed by Dinner at 6:15 and the talk with Scott Fried.
The talk details Scott’s personal story – contacting HIV at age 24, surviving almost three decades, and ultimately turning a curse into a blessing. Scott describes having HIV infection in a context all young people can understand: vulnerability, loneliness, isolation, and hopelessness. His story provides a powerful example of learning from your mistakes and growing through adversity.
Reservations are required and can be placed here.
