This summer, the Main Gallery at the University of Rhode Island Fine Art Center will host the exhibition, Rhode Island Contemporary, a Selection from the Art Collection of Joseph A. Chazan, MD.
The show will run from June 4 to July 5.
Opening Reception: June 12th from 6-8:30pm which is free and open to the public.
The show will consist of approximately 35 works by a wide range of contemporary artists who live and work in Rhode Island and includes paintings and photography as well as works on paper and sculptures in varied materials like bronze and glass.
These works represent Chazan’s long-standing patronage of the arts in Rhode Island and his commitment to support living artists. In addition, Chazan has found other ways of encouraging the arts including his production of the well known Networks video interviews with artists and his support for the Chazan Gallery at the Wheeler School in Providence Notably, many of the works in “Rhode Island Contemporary” usually hang in his medical offices and clinics around the Providence metropolitan area, enlivening for his patients and staff what would otherwise be more predictably neutral walls and spaces.
The artists and historians in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Rhode Island have for many years been impressed by his unique support for the arts and are happy to acknowledge the range and depth of this collector’s eye with this special exhibition. We are doubly delighted that this South County-based exhibition of Rhode Island art will coincide with and complement other Rhode Island-themed exhibitions happening this summer in Newport and Providence.
