Join us for this week’s Physical Oceanography Seminar featuring Dr. Ilson Silveira (Universidad de São Paulo), titled "The Brazil Current Revisited: an overview of IOUSP's work on the western boundary current of the South Atlantic Subtropical Gyre."
Abstract: The Brazil Current (BC) is probably the least known and explored of all the subtropical western boundary currents of the world ocean. In this talk, we offer a brief overview of the research carried out at the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo (IOUSP) on this current system's mean circulation pattern, water masses, and its meridionally-changing vertical structure as well as the possible coupling with the Intermediate Western Boundary Current. We explore the spatial-temporal variability and conduct some zeroth-order dynamical studies of the BC by blending quasi-synoptic data sets, mooring data, and simple process-oriented modeling.
