Giving Voice: A URI Experience Kick-off

Please join us for the kick-off of Giving Voice: A URI Experience

This walking tour at campus based on passages from The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri.  Lahiri’s second novel tells the story of Gauri and brothers Subhash and Udayan. Gauri and Udayan fall in love while Subhash is in the U.S. for graduate school. After Udayan is killed by the police, Subhash proposes to a pregnant Gauri in order to help her keep custody of her child. The newly married couple returns to URI where feelings of uncertainty, alienation, and indifference plague Gauri.

The walking tour pairs locations on campus that appear in the novel with short passages that show Gauri's perspective and her difficulty feeling at home at URI as an accompanying spouse.

Participants will use the smartphone app GeoTourist to listen to recordings of these passages as they reach the proper locations to better understand the diverse experiences of persons on-campus.
